Police and Coastguard teams were out in force on Saturday afternoon (27 November) after a wild camper was reported overdue in the severe weather conditions of the weekend.

A friend of the camper reported the 36-year-old man overdue and possibly missing somewhere in the Loch Sgioport area of South Uist at 1.15pm on Saturday.

Stornoway coastguard operations centre tasked search and rescue helicopter R948, together with coastguard rescue teams from Lochboisdale, Benbecula and Lochmaddy, to support Police Scotland in the effort to locate the man.

The coastguard helicopter eventually spotted the camper and confirmed with him that he was safe and well, intended to continue camping until today (Monday) and would return via Skye.

All the teams were stood down and returned to base by 6.23pm.
