Sad loss…Donnie Martin

The shinty world of the Hebrides and further afield is in mourning after news was released of the death of Skye Camanachd Chieftain Donnie Martin on Thursday (5 May).

Donnie, 65, was the victim of a two-vehicle road accident which happened in Portree, Skye around 2.50pm on Thursday.

After news was disclosed of the identity of the victim, Skye Camanachd posted an announcement that all club activity is suspended, pending a funeral announcement and further tribute.

They said: “Everyone connected with Skye Camanachd is absolutely devastated to learn of the passing of our Club Chieftain Donnie Martin.

“There is no one individual who has made a bigger contribution to Skye Camanachd over the last 50 years than Donnie and his loss to the club is simply immeasurable.

“Donnie was first and foremost a husband, father, papa and brother and our deepest sympathies go out to Alice, Kim and Scott as well as Alistair, Joan, Mairi and Anne and the extended family. Donnie was also a great friend to many.”

Police Scotland’s road policing officers are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, which involved a Volkswagon Caddy van and trailer combination and a Vauxhall Corsa.
Donnie sadly died at the scene and passengers of the other vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Sergeant Neil MacDonald said: “We are continuing with enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

“We would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dash-cam footage that may help with our enquiries to get in touch.”
