The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Kenny Macleod, has paid tribute to former Councillor for Northbay in Barra, Captain Roderick Mackinnon, who has passed away at the age of 93.

Captain Mackinnon served as a Barra Councillor from 1986-1999.

Convener Macleod said: “Roderick Mackinnon was a thoroughly decent man who was passionate about his local community and a formidable advocate for Barra, the Western Isles and the Gaelic language.

"His record of serving on the Comhairle for 13 years and his involvement with local groups speaks volumes for his dedication to his community and the community’s faith in him as their representative.  Our thoughts are with Roddy’s wife and family”.

The Comhairle flags at the offices in Stornoway, and at Castlebay School are flying at half-mast in tribute to the former councillor.

The family have announced the following funeral arrangements.

"Funeral Arrangements for our dearest Dad and Gen, Capt Roddy MacKinnon (Roddy Iain Mhòr), who we loved so very much.

"Arriving on Barra from Stornoway, Saturday evening.

"Saturday - Rosary Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church. 7.30 pm

"Sunday - Funeral 11.30, Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church and on to Eoligarry Cemetery."
