The flag at the Balivanich offices of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is flying at half-mast today (Wednesday 5 October) after news was announced of the death of former North Uist and Benbecula councillor Neil Beaton
Neil passed away at his home in Knockintorran, North Uist. He served on the Comhairle from 2012 to 2017 and was vice-chair of the environment and protective services committee.
Neil had returned from the central belt to his family roots in North Uist some forty years ago, taking up employment locally with QinetiQ on the Hebrides range.
He retired from that post prior to his election to the North Uist and Benbecula ward of the Comhairle in 2012.
He was a member of North Uist Community Council and clerk to the grazings committee in Knockintorran. He also served as a director of North Uist Development Company.
Comhairle convener Cllr Kenny Macleod said today: “Neil was a knowledgeable and unassuming individual who worked quietly and very effectively for his local community.
“Our thoughts are with Neil’s family and friends at this sad time, particularly his wife Grace and daughters Laura and Kirsty.”
Neil is pictured during his time as councillor, making a presentation to school catering staff in Uist and Barra.
