Western Isles Police this morning (Friday 9 December) issued a warning to drivers after a number of incidents on icy island roads.
The current cold snap is causing problems on ungritted roads, but even gritters are feeling the consequences of rain and sleet falling on freezing road surfaces.
A gritter reportedly left the road near Lemreway early this morning, and earlier in the week coastguard teams were called to assist police in the search for a missing driver after a one-vehicle accident at Achmore.
Today’s tweet warns: “Due to a number of recent incidents and the current weather conditions in the Western Isles drivers should take extra care when driving, particularly regarding livestock on or near the roadway.”
There have been recent reports of pigs loose on the road at Laxay, with at least one reported incident of a driver hitting a piglet in the area.
